After mastering basic quilting patterns and techniques, I was inspired to explore beyond the boundaries of conventional quilts...
Air of Contentment
Hand applique, Hand embroidery, and hand quilted/ 1989
This quilt won 3rd prize at an International Quilt Show in Houston. It was an art quilts and very few people made them at the time, so I was shocked when they called my name.
I was inspired while at a hotel in Palo Alto for my son's graduation.
I used to plant pansies in along our front walkway and had been collecting fabrics to do pansies. I added stones and air in the quilting.
Longevity
28 1/2" x 27" / Hand applique, Hand embroidery, and hand quilted / 1989
This quilt won the People’s Choice Award in 1991 at a family member art show during the International Congress of Anesthesiology in New Orleans. A doctor from San Francisco called several times to ask if he could purchase this quilt, perhaps because he was impressed by the fine handwork. I was still new to quilting, with only a few completed works and I was proud of this piece and wanted to keep it for myself.
This quilt was done as a quilt club challenge. 50% of the piece needed to be yellow. I didn't like yellow so I used gold instead. My quilting group was surprised by the detail and quality of my handwork. This pattern includes pine leaves, crane and bamboo leaves which are symbols of longevity and long life in Korea.
Jungle
